The Aeronautical Weather Information Broadcast unit provides an interface with Bureau of Meteorology weather stations that enables weather information to be transmitted on the VHF aviation band at a specified frequency. This allows pilots to select that frequency on their aircraft VHF radio and monitor the weather information for a particular airport location. AWIB units have operational advantages in supporting the ability to undertake GPS instrument non precision approaches to an airport and can alleviate the need for additional Wind Indicators near runway thresholds.

The AA AWIB unit is housed in an enclosure that is compatible with standard 19-inch rack mounting requirements and can be installed in various configurations including housing in weatherproof outdoor enclosures and solar powered operation. All systems require a cavity filter as a condition of licensing.

The AWIB unit has the following features:

• Mains or Solar powered capability.
• 12V Battery for back up or solar
• Ground plane aerial tuned to the specified frequency with optional swivel pole mounting.
• Cavity filter tuned to the specified frequency
• Switchable speaker to enable audio monitoring of broadcast messages.
• Monitoring Indicator for Carrier Activation (Receiving)
• Monitoring indicator for Broadcast (Transmitting)
• System OK indicator
• PTT Test Button to activate without radio transmission.
